Yumi Erica Fukuda's practice often involves confronting names, lands, and words. People's choices are rooted in inherited judgments and cultures. When participants are asked to name objects or explain the meaning of an action, their choice of words can unveil the influences of their background and identity. The focus is on the specificity of communication.

Their work engages in a series of tasks that involve the ambiguity of bearing witness, dialogue, and misunderstanding. Fukuda is drawn to that which is the same but slightly different, making them completely distinct. In doing so, they explore the individual judgment that occurs in a collective space. The conversation between private action, public action, and invisible protest is investigated and subjected to pressure. At times, these works manifest physical traces of meaning, bringing the potential underlying evidence to the surface.

Throughout Their practice, Fukuda reacts to the present situation and continues to dismantle and reanalyze.
